American Pie: The Reunion

Directed by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg – Written by Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg

Starring: Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Seann William Scott, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eddie Kay Thomas, Alyson Hannigan, Tara Reid and Eugene Levy

Here we have it, something I’ve been waiting for since I was around 10, the fourth instalment of American Pie – Yes we are going to ignore the four straight to DVD movies like everybody else.

For this instalment the powers that be brought in Jon Hurwitz, writer and director of the also very mature film series, Harold and Kumar. Now of course this left worries, especially when we all know how much the industry loves to destroy a sequel, but this film is all I had hoped for and reverted me straight back to that child laughing at naughty jokes. Within minutes of opening, a child is left with a ‘wank sock’ on his face after catching his dad, Jim Levenstein (Played brilliantly as always by Jason Biggs), masturbating. We’re in safe hands here.

This is the first time Adam Herz hasn’t penned the American Pie release, so you wouldn’t be blamed for having concerns on whether this is just going to be a forced exploitation of a loved franchise. However, you would not notice the difference. For me this is a genuine homage that harks back to the first film, with a wealth of references that leaves you laughing about what’s on screen now, as well as what was on screen back in ’99.

No we all know the original cast are back, and they are back in a way that’ll satisfy any lover of the films. But, what really did it for me was the appearance of the more obscure cast from the original films. Some of the lacrosse team show up, The Sherminator is back, there is even quite a touching moment between the MILF guys. Seriously, I was touched. We even get some more Stifler’s mum, her scene with Jim’s dad may be my favourite moment.

All it comes down to is this, do not expect anything new or modern in line with comedies released lately. Sit back and enjoy that familiar comic style you’re used to from the trilogy, this is still hand glued to genitals stuff.
